so many books, learnt hebrew and greek. theological college and study study study. so many missions i could not count even my pastor said “stop or you will go dry”. went through many wilderness times but none like the time of divorce and my precious son going to prison at a time when i was homeless and broken and suffering a breakdown, i know you have all been through what i am referring to, so i know you understand. i dragged myself to a little church in a mining village where one is expected to sit at the back and be quiet, pray out loud and everyone will look at you as if you’re a nut. the type of church i criticised for years, i would use the words dead church. but this day reading the liturgy father spoke to me and said “i now have you were i want you. start to listen to me”. so many of us christians are going through a wilderness time and there will be so many more to come but these times are the best time for our spirit. these times are very painful and confusing but we are so much enriched by them at the other end. after over 10 years reading everything and studying i put down all books and simply followed the bible. but one book i read that helped me so much through the times of loneliness and pain was: away through the wilderness by jamie buckingham . i strongly recommend it to you although you may find it hard to come by now, i have just got it on audiobooks. even now after all this time it’s message is helpful. you/we must stand strong in times of trial as things are going to be much harder soon. the suffering he has allowed us to go through has strengthened anthony john dear family trust you are fighting the good fight. i was sat on the side of my bed trying to fix my glasses, it was quiet so i took the opportunity to pray. as soon i started to pray the holy spirit came on me and i found myself praying in the spirit, it was wonderful. as i prayed i felt something leave me, father had delivered me from an unclean spirit (didn’t know i had one) but looking back there has been something tormenting me for years. remorse and regret, looking back over my life i am very often filled with sadness for the hurt i had caused. it is some thing that i have beat myself up about constantly even though i have had ministry for it. i am ashamed to say that i hadn’t prayed in the spirit for years, never even given it a thought really. i use to pray all the time in the spirit but not for some time, don’t know why. this time it was different than before because when i prayed in the spirit years ago it was like using repetitive words, but this time none of the words were repeated and it went on a long time. i felt such a peace but wondered why it happened. when i became a believer my first prayer was in the spirit. i was in such a good mood when two pastors came to pick me up, we were going to a prison to take bibles and teach. the prison was one of the hard ones with a strict system and prisoners serving very long sentences for serious crimes. we had a good time teaching but were constantly interrupted by a man who was a pain. i knew straightaway that he was a rebel because when a prisoner first goes to prison out here they must wear chains around their feet for the first three months of their sentence, some must wear them all the time if they are a problem, this man had been there for years but he was still in chains. what the prisoners do is to tie some string to the centre of the chain and lift the chain when they walk so as not to annoy everyone with the sound of chains being dragged along the floor . when they just drag the chain on the floor it drives the other prisoners mad. like a guard dog gets much more aggressive when it is chained. the prisoner who was a pain was constantly causing trouble in the prison. he would spit in the food of other prisoners and push them around. he would annoy everyone and he paid dearly for it, they say he had been stabbed over 40 times. he isn’t a big man , bit of a weasel kind of guy and would never win a fight but this never stopped him from starting trouble. the other prisoner’s had given up hitting him (leave him, he’s not worth getting in trouble for). he was walking back and forth whilst we were trying to teach. looking at us trying to make eye contact like a snake does. once he gets eye contact he goes into kill mode, again like a snake. i felt as if i was being controlled by a supreme power and walked through the other prisoners straight to the crazy man. in a flash i lifted my hand and slapped it on his forehead. a lot happened in that instance. didn’t even have time to pray. my arm went like a canon barrel and a power came from my chest and down my arm like a canon ball. just like popeye when he eats spinach, you see his muscles moving through his arms’. the canon ball blasted through my arm and through the mans head. i think i just imagined this next bit, i saw an unclean spirit sat on the floor twelve feet behind the man, bewildered, confused and wondering what on earth had just happened. then a heavy door slammed and everyone heard it. the thing is, we were in a prison and heavy doors slam all the time, but this time it was different. it was as if father was saying to the demon “you’re out and you’re staying out”. its hard to express just how quick and unexpected this event was, but i think that it was god’s plan to because the demon was caught totally off guard, we all were. you’ve see a young child pretending to be a rabbit, well the crazy man was doing that. he was so full of joy he was hopping around shouting “i am free” he was trying to hug the guards (bad move) all this was witnessed by the two pastors and all the group of prisoners we were teaching as well as prisoners not in the group but were observing. mayhem, everyone talking at the same time and all wanting ministry. the guards had had enough and stopped the meeting. the crazy man was laughing and singing about being free and i was kicked out. they must have thought i was starting a riot, any signs of confusion and the guards move in. as the guards escorted me the exit i turned and saw four guards carrying crazy man to a cell he was hog tied but he lifted his head and was still shouting “i am free” perhaps many of us are like that man tied to this world yet free in christ and yet rejoicing. alone outside the prison gate, no shade, no water nothing to do so i just sat on the floor praying for my friends and waiting for the inevitable mosquito to stick his samurai sword into my jugular vein. then a guard in a small tower shouted in his megaphone “move” “go away from the prison, now” so i walked to the car park and sat in the shade of a car until my friends came out. when they eventually came they were full of joy and never stopped talking. we set off for an orphanage we had planed to visit (will write about that visit soon) as we where driving south one of the pastors received a call. it was the warden from the prison, he wanted us to come back but i was not going back without any bibles. so plans were made to see him the next morning at 10.30 and giving us time to go to the bookshop in the morning and get more bibles for our visit. the meeting went really good. he wanted to understand what had happened the day before. he could not understand how crazy man had a total change of character. we had to answer the wardens questions about jesus. he would ask a question but before we answered him he would ask another one. we fed the prisoners and held another meeting where we gave out the bibles. but this time the warden was sat at the back of the meeting observing. a number of guards were also at the meeting, i had never seen guards join in a meeting before. the warden was sat at the back on one side of the meeting. the crazy man, who is not crazy was sat all the way over the other side. i said to the warden please do something for me. take the chains off crazy man who is not crazy. the warden turned to look for him, at that very moment the not crazy man turned to the warden and smiled. the warden motioned to a guard and the guard took not crazy man from the meeting to have his chains removed. when he returned he was invited to sit next to the warden. i am not saying they had become friends, i think it was that the warden wanted to understand what was happening but it was good to see. all went well and souls were saved in jesus name, prisoners were given the word and it was arranged for the pastors to start a study group. since the last update we have had seven such meetings. this was possible because they where all in thailand. i am not doing any expensive missions in laos or vietnam until i get the visa money it, i must save for that. the work in thailand is like having a rest even with the work we are doing. i have more to report but your probably bored now so i will write again very soon. who you are is a gift from god. what you do is a gift to god. tony i went on and asked tony what words he used when he saw the crazy man delivered and in his right mind. tony said this. i was going to say get out of him but it all happened so quick that no i never got a word out. it was so quick that nether he, me or the guards had any time to blink. it wad over in a flash. but like i said, i think it was right as the demon was taken completely of guard. cool a first for me. you know stan their are a lot of ministry's in the church but none of them comes even close to the most important one: servant. the one who just gets on and puts the chairs away at the end of a meeting. paul an important prisoner was the one collecting firewood when they were ship wrecked. the king of the universe washed sweaty feet. i am going to try harder to serve. love you old boy may your loved ones be blessed beyond measure. happy easter everyone. back in 1987 i was walking out of a funeral service and as the vicar stood at the door shaking everyone by the hand as they left, i had this thought in my head as i looked at the bible he had in his hand. i thought to myself. "i wonder what the bible really means". well i soon forgot my moment of interest and just got on with things as usual. i had been injured for a while with a serious left shoulder injury. by april 1990 i hadn't been able to train for a number of years and depression had set in. as i lay in bed thinking of surgery i fell into despair thinking that it would all take ages. at that moment i saw the light and thought "god must know all about me, he created me" i cried out for the first time to jesus as god. take my life jesus i cried to him. heal my shoulder jesus. at that moment the holy presence of almighty god filled my room and came to live in me. i went peacefully off to sleep and awoke in the morning knowing that i had met with god. as i began to move my long time shoulder injury. i had not pain because god had completely healed me. that was 28 years ago and today at nearly 60 i have recently benched 150 kilo. well over the last 28 years i have had and seen many miracles from jesus and met thousands of people who have had similar experiences. so after all this time reading the bible with jesus as my teacher. what does the bible really mean. well the central message is what the time of easter is really all about. to put it in a nutshell. "its about jesus wanting to save us all from hell, the final judgement and eternal punishment in the lake of fire". you see the bible says that we have all sinned against god by breaking his eternal moral law. (which i think you should read in conjunction with what follows), i wrote: it is in the new testament where we find the words ghosts and spirits being used more often, interchangeably between translations. there are two greek words that are used. the first is φάντασμα ( phantasma ), which literally means ‘apparition’ like the commonly understood word ‘ghost’. the word πνεῦμα ( pneuma ) means spirit, air, or breath. this can refer to what i described before as the essence of a being. it can also mean ‘demons’ when paired with the word ἀκάθαρτον ( akatharton ). the most remembered new testament passage regarding ghosts is matthew 14:26 . whereas the kjv says: “and when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, it is a spirit [ phantasma ]; and they cried out for fear,” the esv says, “but when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, ‘it is a ghost!’ and they cried out in fear.” and mark 6:49 : “but when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit [ phantasma ], and cried out” (kjv). “but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost, and cried out” (esv). on another occasion when jesus suddenly appeared in the room with the disciples, they said: “but they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit [greek pneuma ]” ( luke 24:37, kjv ). the esv says, “but they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit.” notice in these examples how in its translations the esv distinguishes between the two greek words, whereas the kjv translates both the greek pneuma and phantasma as “spirit”. these first passages are referring to the occasion when jesus was seen walking on the surface of the sea of galilee, and the luke account is when the resurrected jesus appeared to the disciples in the room. obviously, the disciples had never seen a man do anything like either of these events before, so their first thought was to invoke the supernatural, resorting to ideas from their culture to explain it. in the luke account, they had seen jesus die on the cross not too long before, so they thought they were seeing his spirit (a somewhat understandable reaction since he suddenly appeared in a locked room). and jesus reinforces this in luke 24:39 after his resurrection when he says: “see my hands and my feet, that it is i myself. touch me, and see. for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that i have.” ‘ spirit’ is a multi-use term so here jesus is saying that it is not just his spirit that appeared but that he had been bodily resurrected. it can be confusing because there are many definitions of the word spirit in the bible and earlier we even saw the disciples chastised for believing in cultural interpretations of their experience with our supernatural creator. people seeing strange things in the sky with no biblical basis or filter often interpret these as alien spacecraft or in the case of alleged abductions, real physical aliens. the bible clearly records that spirits, as in angels, can appear physically, can interact physically with people and can affect our environment just as serpent (presumably a snake). then in exodus7:11–12 we read, “then pharaoh summoned the wise men and the sorcerers, and they, the magicians of egypt, also did the same by their secret arts. for each man cast down his staff, and they became serpents. but aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs.” many think that pharaoh’s sorcerers conjured up an illusion but this cannot be so, because aaron’s serpent swallowed the sorcerer’s serpent (note it says the sorcerers “did the same … and they became serpents”. now, while satan does not have the power of ex nihilo creation, i believe this is an example of where he and his minions possibly manifested as something distinctly different, yet physical, or somehow he has manipulated matter to appear as something different. this is speculation, of course, but all we can glean is that aaron’s snake certainly did not swallow an illusion. the cultural interpretation of ‘spirit’ our views of angels as just spiritual beings—that is, somehow just ethereal, ghostly or vaporous is culturally driven by images of beings with fairy wings, for example. pastor johnny hunt (former president of the southern baptist convention) addressed this misconception in the movie. it is clear that they are intelligent, thinking beings, and can appear physically in a variety of forms in our realm. we saw earlier how biblically the word spirit can mean different things depending upon the context. a word search will reveal a multitude of applications. for example, angels are called “ministering spirits” ( heb. 1:14 ). one can have a “spirit of jealousy” ( numbers 5:30 ). or that “the spirit of the lord was upon jephthah” ( judges 11:29 ). “blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven ( matt. 5:3 ). “but it is the life-giving spirit.” if we are limited in what we can test, then we need to limit our speculation, or rather what we can know, to what scripture tells us about such things. but both adam and jesus were/are physical beings. and whenever we see the term applied to people, and even jesus, it is clear that ‘the spirit’ it not the sum of who we are, but part of who we are. all humans are physical, but we also have an eternal spiritual component. so, is it possible that it is similar with angels? i do not know what their ‘spiritual’ realm is like or how they exist there (if at all in some physical sense), but the bible is clear that they are powerful, can take on many guises, and can appear physically our realm. for example, gabriel appearing before daniel in daniel 10:10–20 and explaining fighting other fallen angels. or luke 1:26–56 where gabriel appears to mary. all of this is very challenging to our preconceived perceptions of the spiritual realm. at the end of the day, these are just insights that we can draw from scripture, and i have to admit that we do see through a glass rather darkly in this regard, simply because we are limited by our own spacetime dimensions in which we live. in short, we can't go there, but they can come and go here, so we have a very limited perspective. i’ve heard all sorts of grandiose ideas over years, but such speculation is not recommended. if we are limited in what we can test, then we need to limit our speculation, or rather what we can know, to what scripture tells us about such things. there are literally dozens more
